Walking on Cloud Nine NI…
When Yoga Teacher Fiona Jones ( Cloud Nine NI Yoga Stretch & Relaxation ) returned from Canada several years ago she was so taken by the beauty and peace of the forest on her doorstep that she organised her first Yoga morning in Glenariff Forest Park, five years ago, in 2013.
The stunning Wooden Waterfall Walkway was the brainchild of Irish civil engineer Berkeley Deane Wise who also built the famous and recently reopened Gobbins Cliff Path.
Back in the late 1800’s intrepid Victorians would reach the forest tearooms by jaunting cart from the local railway station. Here they would view the Falls through coloured glass, perhaps enjoy some refreshments and maybe have a photograph developed in the installed darkrooms. Berkely Deane wise had carefully considered his visitor experience.Â Likewise, we at Glens of Antrim Yoga Tours hope to do the same!
This Mindful Morning starts with a gentle Hatha Yoga class at the Laragh Lodge Restaurant situated at the base of the Falls and overlooking the lush trees and flowing Inver River.Â Yoga is mood boosting and relaxing and sets the scene for the Forest Experience.Â As one participant put it: ”The Yoga was a perfect start to the day.”
The class is followed by refreshments,a quick change into suitable clothing and we commence our walk. The pace is gentle (we stop to smell the wild garlic !)Â Visitors are given an historical and cultural backdrop to the Forest Park however the emphasis here is on Mother Nature.Â We take in the flora, fauna and keep an eye out for the native Red Squirrels.
Somewhere along the way we stop for a Mindful Meditation and an aptly named ‘Tree Pose’ to ground and centre us.Â Recent Studies have highlighted the many benefits both physical and mental /emotional of walking mindfully in the forest. It is said to lower heart rates and reduce stress hormones. We now know that tress emit essential oils which have been shown to enhance our Immune Systems.Â So, the Forest Walk is not just fun and enjoyable it is also a form of Eco- Therapy!Â Then it is back to the Laragh Lodge for a Main Course Lunch ( Vegetarian option ).
